One application I found that would be useful for student learning purposes is "e-learning for kids." (See link below.) This application allows kids to learn anywhere with no charge. The web application aims to reinforce essential skills. The lessons provide "fun & free learning for kids aged 5-12" in the areas of math, science, language arts, english language, health & life skills, and computer skills. The site has been created by volunteer staff of educators.
The lessons on the site are organized by subject and by appropriate age. The lessons explain topics and also provide practice. The lessons are provided in a slideshow-like format. No login is required. Although the practice problems I viewed were not interactive, they did give great explanations for the correct answers. I think that this would be a great tool for students to work with on topics that they are struggling with.

Another web application I found that would be useful for both teaching and learning purposes is called Livemocha. This helps individuals learn languages; currently 11 different languages are supported. The website has lessons and many opportunties to practice speaking, reading, writing, and listening to another language. It connects langauge learners to native langauge speakers to encourage actual conversations. Users also can write and critique the writings of others.
Although this wouldn't be an app I would use in my particular teaching, I could use it as a learner. (In fact, I'm really hoping to actually use the site to work on learning a language this summer once the crazy semester is over!) A second-language teacher could also take advantage of the system, which is free, to help students get valuable practice using language skills.
